Investigating the sociocultural integration of international migrant students enrolled in South African higher learning institutions in Mbombela.

Abstract

In the last two decades, international student mobility has become a significant aspect of higher education, as migration has resulted in various students relocating to host communities during their studies. Numerous scholars have produced a substantial amount of literature; however, the African continent has seen a decline in published studies in this area due to the relatively low number of research initiatives conducted within African nations. This study aims to address the shortage of research in Africa focusing on migration for education and the sociocultural integration of international migrant students. The objective of this study was to examine the complex dynamics and investigate the social patterns resulting from social interactions, explore identities within the diverse cultural landscape, and analyze how cultural backgrounds affect the sociocultural integration of international migrant students in the host community. This study investigates how international students integrate into the sociocultural landscape of tertiary institutions in Mbombela, South Africa, providing an in-depth analysis of their shared experiences and adaptation strategies. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, the research employed a case study design to gain a thorough understanding of these students' experiences and challenges while adapting to a new cultural and academic environment. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with a targeted group of international students, aiming to capture their perspectives on integration dynamics, such as social connections, cultural adaptation, and the support provided by institutions. Thematic analysis was applied to systematically identify and interpret the key themes emerging from the data, shedding light on the barriers and facilitators of sociocultural integration. Findings reveal that although international migrant students enrich the cultural diversity and academic vibrancy of the host community, they face significant challenges to completing their sociocultural integration, such as language barriers, cultural difficulties, and limited institutional support. Despite these challenges, many students employ strategies like engaging with the community and participating in cultural exchange activities to enhance their sociocultural integration. Recommendations drawn from this study suggest that higher education institutions in Mbombela can enhance the sociocultural integration of international migrant students by establishing cultural hubs that focus on intercultural exchange, emphasizing the integration of international migrant students.
